FCA Intensifies Crackdown on Illegal Financial Promotions and Market Abuse
The UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has announced significant progress in its campaign against illegal financial promotions, market abuse and unauthorised investment activity. The regulator says the first year of its current five-year strategy has focused heavily on protecting consumers from financial crime while strengthening confidence in UK financial markets.
According to the FCA, enforcement activity has included an international operation targeting unlawful financial influencers, commonly known as “finfluencers”, alongside action against insider dealing, money laundering weaknesses and misleading financial promotions. The regulator said these measures have delivered an estimated £5.6 billion in benefits for consumers, firms and the wider economy.
International Action Against Illegal Finfluencers
One of the most notable enforcement initiatives involved a coordinated international operation aimed at individuals promoting financial products without appropriate authorisation.
The FCA reported that the operation resulted in three arrests, six criminal proceedings, multiple warning letters and approximately 650 social media takedown requests. Authorities also issued dozens of public warnings against firms and individuals suspected of breaching financial promotion rules.
Illegal financial promotions have become an increasing concern as social media platforms continue to influence investment decisions, particularly among younger investors who may rely on online personalities rather than regulated financial advisers.
Firm Checker Continues to Expand
The regulator also highlighted the growing use of its Firm Checker service, which allows consumers to verify whether a financial firm is authorised before investing.
Since its introduction, the tool has reportedly been used more than 1.9 million times, reflecting increased public awareness of investment fraud and the importance of confirming regulatory authorisation before sending money.
Market Abuse Remains a Priority
Alongside consumer protection, the FCA reported successful action against market abuse.
During the reporting period, two insider dealing cases resulted in combined prison sentences totalling eleven years. The regulator also imposed financial penalties on firms for anti-money laundering control failures and transaction reporting deficiencies.
Officials said these enforcement actions are intended to improve confidence in UK financial markets while discouraging criminal activity that undermines investor trust.
Growing Focus on Consumer Protection
The regulator noted that financial crime continues to evolve alongside technology, making proactive supervision increasingly important. Investment scams frequently begin with online advertisements, social media promotions or unsolicited contact that directs victims toward unauthorised firms.
Consumers are encouraged to verify a firm’s regulatory status independently before investing and to avoid relying solely on recommendations from influencers or online advertisements promising unusually high returns. Using official regulatory resources remains one of the simplest ways to reduce exposure to fraudulent investment schemes.
Why This Matters
The latest enforcement figures demonstrate that regulators are increasing cooperation across borders to combat online investment fraud. As financial promotions increasingly move onto digital platforms, regulators are placing greater emphasis on identifying unauthorised promotions before they reach large audiences.
For investors, the announcement serves as another reminder that professional-looking social media content should never be treated as evidence that an investment opportunity is genuine. Verifying regulatory authorisation remains one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of becoming a victim of investment fraud.
